Designer Children
  • Natural selection: The removal of “weak” traits from the population; typically by disease, predation, or failure to acquire a mate.

  • Artificial Selection: The removal of “weak” traits from the population as determined by humans
  • The “cracking” of the genetic code has opened up numerous possibilities in regards to the manipulation of the genetic make-up of our children. On the horizon looms the very real possibility that humans will be able tinker with the DNA and consequently change the genetics of the child.

A gene map of the fetus would allow the parents to identify genes of concerns; such as those responsible for sickle cell anemia, diabetes, or mental disorders such as schizophrenia. Knowing in advance your child’s attributes is one thing; however, we will reach a point where we change those “little A-T-C-G” around to modify our offspring. A couple of “tweaks” to the gene for hemoglobin may eliminate sickle cell anemia from your family tree. Does obesity run in the family? Modify the nucleotides and solve the problem.

What was once random chance or divine intervention will soon be the outcome of design.

“I don’t care as long as it is healthy.” Such a statement was out of necessity since parents had no way of controlling the outcome.

Imagine: “I don’t care as long as she has blue eyes, blond hair, a potential height of 6’0” and is free from any hereditary disorders.

Most parents do everything in their power to insure the success of their children. We provide them with the best education, the best health care, and numerous other opportunities to increase their chances for happiness and success.

Should we not also seek to provide them with the best genes?
